Victory at West Brom will see Chelsea crowned Premier League champions after they relegated Middlesbrough with a 3-0 win on Monday.

Diego Costa, Marcos Alonso and Nemanja Matic were all on target as Chelsea moved a step closer to the Premier League title with a 3-0 home win over Middlesbrough, who are relegated as a result.

Chelsea will be crowned champions if they are able to win at West Brom on Friday, while Boro drop back to the Championship after a single season’s stay in the top flight.

Costa gave Chelsea a deserved lead after a dominant opening to the game, finishing off a fine pass from Cesc Fabregas, via a touch off Cesar Azpilicueta.

Within 10 minutes the Chelsea lead was doubled, Alonso stealing in at the back post to steer home his sixth league goal of the season thanks to a deflection from Brad Guzan’s thigh.

The goalkeeper was nutmegged again by Matic, Fabregas supplying his 10th assist of the campaign for a record sixth different season, as Antonio Conte’s men ran riot to register Chelsea’s 300th Premier League home win.

A crushing triumph extends the Blues’ series of successes against Boro to seven without conceding a single goal, as Steve Agnew’s side were unable to cope with the quality of the champions-elect.

Chelsea almost took the lead in the second minute when a lovely lofted Fabregas pass picked out Alonso, but Guzan got enough on the wing-back’s volley to deflect the ball on to the crossbar.

Fabregas – selected in place of injured Player of the Year winner N’Golo Kante – had Chelsea’s next chance when Eden Hazard picked him out with a low cutback, but the Spaniard’s placed strike fizzed wide of Guzan’s right-hand post.

Costa felt he should have had a penalty after 20 minutes when George Friend brought him down, with Hazard’s cross only needing a touch, but the striker would not be denied moments later.

Fabregas was given too much space to find Costa in the box and, following a touch from Azpilicueta, the Spain international centre-forward rolled a calm finish between Guzan’s legs for his 20th league goal of the season.

Boro could not hold the champions-elect at bay and the second goal duly arrived after 34 minutes.

This time it was Azpilicueta who was left in the same pocket of space outside the area, with Alonso timing his run perfectly and exploiting slack Boro marking to finish through Guzan’s legs.

The interval failed to stem the flow of chances, with Conte’s men hitting the woodwork again immediately after the restart, Pedro firing a strike that clipped the crossbar.

Fabregas picked up his landmark assist after 64 minutes following patient approach play, flicking the ball up to Matic’s chest, the midfielder controlling before firing home with Guzan beaten between his legs for the third time on the night.

Tottenham’s loss at West Ham on Friday opened the door to Chelsea and their coronation as champions is now imminent, with Conte even able to give captain John Terry a cameo from the bench – to a rapturous reception – as he nears his departure from the club.

Manchester United’s 25-match unbeaten run was ended by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium as the hosts won 2-0 on Sunday.

Danny Welbeck helped end Manchester United’s 25-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, scoring Arsenal’s second in a 2-0 win over his former team which handed Arsene Wenger a first top-flight triumph over Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese coach tempted fate by making eight changes from Thursday’s Europa League win over Celta Vigo and it ultimately backfired, with the hosts consigning them to their first league defeat since losing 4-0 to Chelsea in October.

After a particularly frenetic start which saw each side waste good opportunities, Arsenal looked the more purposeful going forward and spent long periods probing a stubborn United defence which included Premier League debutant Axel Tuanzebe.

But the best chance of the half fell to Wayne Rooney, who pounced on a defensive error before being denied by Petr Cech.

Arsenal ultimately took charge in the second half, though, with Granit Xhaka’s deflected strike breaking the deadlock, before Welbeck scored against his old club for the third time to effectively wrap things up before the hour mark.

United rarely looked like battling back as Arsenal saw things out in professional fashion and gave their slender Champions League hopes a boost, while Mourinho and his men turn their attentions back to the Europa League semi-finals after beating Celta 1-0 in Spain in the first leg.

The two sides produced a frenetic start and both went close inside the first eight minutes.

Arsenal were the first to be carved open, as Rooney fed Anthony Martial and the Frenchman saw his poked attempt turned around the post by Cech.

Alexis Sanchez then found Aaron Ramsey with an inch-perfect pass a few moments later, only for David De Gea to brilliantly palm his effort past the right-hand post.

Things soon settled down and Arsenal became the dominant force, troubling United twice just before the half-hour mark.

Both chances fell to Welbeck, who first saw a six-yard effort crucially blocked by Phil Jones following a corner, before Chris Smalling produced a similarly important intervention to get in the way of the striker’s first-time shot.

United should have made the breakthrough soon after, but Cech bailed out Rob Holding following a horribly misplaced backpass which was seized upon by Rooney.

Arsenal made the most of that let-off early in the second half and left United with a mountain to climb.

Xhaka broke the deadlock in fortuitous fashion in the 54th minute as his 30-yard drive took a wicked deflection off Ander Herrera and looped over the helpless De Gea.

And just three minutes later Welbeck put Arsenal two up, rising to meet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s right-wing cross with a fine header which found the net via the crossbar.

Mourinho attempted to claw United back into the contest by introducing Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford form the bench, but neither had a huge impact.

The visitors’ final throw of the dice saw 20-year-old attacker Scott McTominay thrown on for his Premier League debut six minutes from time.

Proceedings had long since lost any real tempo, though, and Arsenal comfortably held on to move to within two points of United and six of Manchester City, while the Gunners still have a game in hand on both.

West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini struck to leave Tottenham’s Premier League title hopes in tatters and Chelsea with one hand on the trophy.

Chelsea’s grip on the Premier League title strengthened after West Ham battled to a shock 1-0 win over second-placed Tottenham.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side headed into the match on a superb run of nine consecutive victories that had prevented Chelsea from turning their bid for glory into a procession.

But they were short of their best at the London Stadium and Manuel Lanzini’s goal 20 minutes into the second period ensured Spurs would remain four points behind Chelsea, having played a game more.

Victory over lowly Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge on Monday would put Antonio Conte’s men seven points clear with three games remaining and Chelsea’s seemingly favourable run-in comprises matches with West Brom, Watford and Sunderland.

Lanzini further enhanced his reputation as a London derby specialist, the Argentinian’s strike standing as his ninth in 14 all-capital encounters, and Slaven Bilic’s team are up to ninth in the table on 42 points – extinguishing their faintly lingering relegation fears.

Kyle Walker was called back into the Tottenham line-up in place of Kieran Trippier and he was caught napping in the sixth minute, with Lanzini racing onto Andre Ayew’s raking ball into the space behind the England right-back to drag a shot wide.

West Ham were in down Walker’s flank again five minutes later and Victor Wanyama raced back to make an excellent clearing header as Sam Byram waited to convert.

Walker was then booked for a robust follow through on Lanzini as Spurs looked to launch a counter-attack, with Mark Noble clattering into Eric Dier shortly afterwards to even up that aspect of a feisty start.

Adrian shovelled a Harry Kane drive back into his area, with Son Heung-min’s follow-up blocked before the West Ham goalkeeper atoned for his mistake by brilliantly denying Kane with his boot.

Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris charged out of his area to challenge Lanzini in the 27th minute and was relieved to see Cheikhou Kouyate’s lobbed follow-up squirt behind.

Christian Eriksen drilled narrowly wide from outside the area but Tottenham were still searching for the breakthrough when the interval arrived.

Ayew lashed over from 18 yards seven minutes into the second half and Spurs appeared increasingly edgy as the hour approached – Eriksen’s tame sidefoot at Adrian lacking conviction when promisingly placed.

Son took advantage of Walker’s run down the outside to open up room by lashing towards the bottom-left corner from the edge of the box, giving Adrian a more taxing workout.

But Tottenham’s title hopes were in tatters after 65 minutes as West Ham opened the scoring.

Aaron Cresswell shovelled a cross in from the left at the second attempt and, after Jonathan Calleri and Ayew had attempts blocked, Lanzini was on hand to lash in from six yards.

Pochettino sent on Mousa Dembele and Vincent Janssen in an attempt to rouse his side but they remained scrambled.

Toby Alderweireld played himself into trouble inside his own area and it needed an excellent save from Lloris to thwart Calleri.

Eriksen lashed over but Tottenham were running on empty, with West Ham substitute Ashley Fletcher going agonisingly close to number two just before a final whistle that will have prompted significant celebrations in west London.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau appeared in a new video published online on Thursday, rejecting claims he had been injured in an airstrike in remote northeast Nigeria.

The jihadist chief was said to have been wounded and one of his deputies killed when two air force jets bombarded fighters at Balla village, on the edge of the Sambisa Forest in Borno state, last Friday.

Surveillance footage showed missiles being fired on what the air force said were Boko Haram fighters, while the army announced it had “neutralised quite a number of terrorists”, including in Balla.

“There were indications that quite a number of the terrorists’ key leaders have either been killed or wounded,” army spokesman Brigadier-General Sani Usman said earlier Thursday, without naming Shekau.

But in a 14-minute video, the shadowy Boko Haram leader claimed ignorance of both the incident and the location, insisting he was not injured and that none of his key lieutenants was harmed either.

“I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m alive,” he said, wearing his trademark camouflage jacket and cradling an assault rifle.

“I’m alive, you have not killed any of my men. I didn’t even know this incident you are talking about ever happened.

“What surprises me is your claim that I’m nursing wounds. Look at me well. Look at my sitting posture.”

There was no indication where the video was shot.

In it, Shekau was flanked by two masked, armed men, sitting against what appeared to be a desert camouflage net and Boko Haram’s black and white insignia.

He spoke in Hausa and Arabic.

The Nigerian authorities’ reticence about naming Shekau is likely to come from previous occasions when his death has been announced prematurely, only for him to reappear in video messages.

He has rejected military claims the rebels are depleted and in disarray as a result of a sustained counter-offensive that began in early 2015 and recaptured swathes of territory.

A source with links to the Islamist militants told AFP on Wednesday that Shekau narrowly escaped death when the second missile hit as he was on his way to preach at Friday prayers.

“It’s bloody propaganda,” he said of Shekau’s video denial.

“Shekau hurt his back from the impact of the second strike. He was injured in the back and then taken out of the area to a place around Kolofata (near the Cameroon border),” he added.

“You can see he is not the same Shekau we were seeing in other videos. He didn’t exude the same energy.”

The Boko Haram insurgency has left at least 20,000 people dead and made more than 2.6 million others homeless since 2009, devastating the region and leaving millions dependent on humanitarian aid.

Juventus took a huge step towards the Champions League final as a Gonzalo Higuain double secured a 2-0 victory in Monaco.

The Italian champions saw off Barcelona in the last eight and powered past their opponents ahead of next week’s return in Turin.

Higuain was the star of the show for Massimiliano Allegri’s men, scoring either side of half-time.

His first came after a fine team move as Dani Alves teed up the Argentine with a fine backheel.

The Brazilian then found Higuain again for the second as the striker bundled home at the back post.

Monaco pressed for a consolation goal but couldn’t find a way past the Juventus defence and Gianluigi Buffon.

Here are five things we learned.

1. Higuain finally delivers on the big stage

Gonzalo Higuain’s goal record cannot be argued with but there is a suggestion he is something of a flat-track bully.

The Argentine striker has often flattered to deceive in the biggest matches – missing key chances in the World Cup and Copa America finals.

A series of opportunities also passed him by in the last round against Barcelona and this looked set to be one of those nights after an almost comical start from the 29-year-old in Monaco.

But Higuain dispelled the myth surrounding him as he added the finishing touches to a stunning move after Dani Alves’ backheel.

A big moment from a big player, at last.

He didn’t stop there either and prodded home the second from another Alves’ cross.

2. Goals dry up for Monaco

Massimiliano Allegri altered his shape for the clash, reverting to the back three we became accustomed to under Antonio Conte.

The switch paid off too as Kylian Mbappe and Radamel Falcao were kept quiet for the large part.

Incredibly, this is just the fourth time Monaco haven’t scored this season – that’s 59 matches.

Juve haven’t conceded in six in the competition.

3. Alves reminds Barca what they’re missing
Just why did Barcelona let Dani Alves go?

The Brazilian was excellent against his former club in the last round and was equally as impressive tonight.

Deployed as a right wing-back, he was given license to get even further forward than usual and set up both goals for Higuain.

Barca have had their problems at full-back this season and will surely look for an addition in that position in the summer.

How they would love to have their former man Alves back.

4. Buffon keeps out Mbappe

One of the most intriguing subplots in a semi-final slate full of intriguing subplots was the battle between wily veteran Gianluigi Buffon and Kylian Mbappe, the teenage striker who is young enough to be his grandson. Or something.

And the pair were at it early. Monaco found a groove after a nervy opening ten minutes with the busy Mbappe at the centre of everything.

The teenager should have done better with a header that was straight at Buffon and the Italian go the better out of him moments later with a smart low save.

It was more of the same in the second half, as Buffon was always one step ahead, rushing out to prevent any danger before it happened on a number of occasions.

The hosts heads’ dropped after the second goal, with Mbappe struggling to impact the game once Juve took an iron grip on the tie. As quick and nimble as the teenager’s feet are, the brain of Buffon is faster.

5. Stade Louis II can come to life

It’s such a shame that such an incredibly vibrant team as Monaco is often seen as a sideshow for the parked-up yachts and casino set.

The atmosphere of the Stade Louis II doesn’t put it on many football fans’ away days wish lists, seemingly more about the corporate boxes than those there to watch the action.

But the Principality was well up for this one.

An electric atmosphere that the side on its way to the Ligue 1 title deserves.
Until, of course, Higuain’s double put the silencers on.

Juventus took a huge step towards the Champions League final by earning a two-goal win over Monaco, courtesy of Gonzalo Higuain.

Gonzalo Higuain ended his woe in the Champions League knockout stages with a crucial double as Juventus recorded a 2-0 away win over Monaco to take full control of their semi-final tie.

Juve striker Higuain came into the match having only netted twice in his last 24 knockout games in the competition, but banished his reputation as a player who does not shine in big games by scoring the same amount in a single match at Stade Louis II.

The Argentina international scored with a first-time finish in both halves, the impressive Dani Alves creating both goals to take the sting out of Monaco, who had started strongly.

After keeping out a Monaco side who had scored 12 goals in the knockout stages this season, Juve’s rock-solid defence have now conceded just twice in 11 Champions League games this season.

And Massimiliano Allegri’s men are now strong favourites to reach what would be their second final in three years when the two teams meet for the second leg in Turin next Tuesday.

Real Madrid are the likely opponents for the winners of this tie in Cardiff after defeating Atletico Madrid 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final.

Juve had more of the early possession but it was Monaco, led by star man Kylian Mbappe, who threatened first with two good opportunities.

First, Mbappe could only send a free header straight at Gianluigi Buffon, before the Italy goalkeeper – making his 100th Champions League appearance for Juve – had to beat away a close-range volley from the teenager, both chances created by Nabil Dirar.

Radamel Falcao and Kamil Glik went close with headed efforts for the hosts, but it was Juve who took the lead with a wonderful team goal after 29 minutes.

The move started all the way back with Buffon and picked up in pace when an impressive flick from Paulo Dybala allowed Alves to find Higuain, who charged towards goal before playing it back to the former Barcelona defender down the right.

Alves then sent a lovely return backheel into Higuain’s path, which the Argentina international took in his stride, firing a low finish into the far corner from 15 yards.

The goal slowed Monaco’s momentum and Juve’s Dybala had a free-kick saved by Danijel Subasic prior to the interval.

But Monaco should have equalised early in the second half, Falcao failing to beat Buffon with an effort lacking power after Bernardo Silva had impressively set him up.

Juve then wasted an excellent chance of their own, Claudio Marchisio – starting in place of the suspended Sami Khedira – capitalising on a loose pass and racing in on goal only to be denied by Subasic’s legs.

But the visitors did double their lead just before the hour mark, with Higuain striking again.

Alves was once more the creator, exchanging passes with Dybala before sending in a cross from the right, Higuain sliding in at the back post to convert left-footed from six yards.

Leonardo Jardim brought on Joao Moutinho, Valere Germain and Almamy Toure as he looked for a way back into the tie.

But Juve, who themselves withdrew Higuain, prevented Monaco from creating any chances of note until Buffon had to make a crucial save as the match entered stoppage time.

Germain latched on to Moutinho’s free-kick and powered a header at goal, but the veteran goalkeeper tipped it over as the visitors kept yet another clean sheet and took a huge step towards the final.

A second derby hat-trick this season saw Cristiano Ronaldo give Real Madrid a 3-0 win over Atletico in the Champions League semi-final.

Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved himself to be the man for the big occasion as his hat-trick gave holders Real Madrid a commanding 3-0 advantage in their Champions League semi-final against city rivals Atletico Madrid.

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner has seemingly saved his best for Europe’s premier competition this season, scoring five of Madrid’s six goals in their pulsating quarter-final triumph over Bayern Munich, and he headed the opener after 10 minutes at a raucous Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid’s fans unveiled a huge banner celebrating the 2014 and 2016 final triumphs over their neighbours before kick-off and Ronaldo ensured the knife-edge tension of those extra-time and penalty shootout wins would be removed from this tie.

The contest fell into a familiarly fractious and cagey rhythm after the interval, but Madrid’s talisman intervened to render the last European match at the Vicente Calderon a formality.

Ronaldo rifled an unstoppable shot into the top corner in the 73rd minute and claimed the matchball four minutes from time, meaning a grim catalogue of misery in this European fixture continued for Diego Simeone’s side.

The hosts should have led in the seventh minute. Right-back Dani Carvajal exchanged passes with Isco and darted into the box, forcing a save from Jan Oblak before Karim Benzema was unable to turn in from close range.

It mattered little as Madrid made short work of Atletico’s famously misery rearguard soon afterwards.

Sergio Ramos’ initial cross was cleared by Diego Godin, but Casemiro clattered the loose ball into the turf and back towards the six-yard box, where Ronaldo stole in front of Stefan Savic to head home.

Atletico were rattled and needed a fine save from Oblak in the 16th minute after Raphael Varane glanced Toni Kroos’ corner low to the goalkeeper’s left.

Oblak’s opposite number Keylor Navas was out sharply to thwart Kevin Gameiro, with the Atletico forward’s attempt to round him lacking conviction.

Madrid continued to make most of the running – Benzema hooking an overhead kick beyond the crossbar in the 29th minute after Ronaldo tormented Atletico’s makeshift right-back Lucas Hernandez to send in the cross.

Carvajal brought down Yannick Carrasco at the other end, giving Antoine Griezmann the opportunity to flight a wonderful free-kick into the Madrid box that a stretching Godin volleyed over.

A highly satisfactory half for Madrid ended with a couple of their players in the wars – Casemiro left with a bloodied lip after defending a 40th-minute corner before Carvajal limped off with an apparent hamstring injury in stoppage time.

The second half resumed at an undulating pace, with Isco and Saul Niguez earning bookings for clumsy fouls on Hernandez and Carvajal’s replacement Nacho respectively, but both team struggled for precision with the final ball as the occasion began to weigh heavily.

Isco was a touch fortunate to escape a second booking when he caught Koke late – an argument Atletico boss Simeone made in animated fashion on the touchline – and Zinedine Zidane responded by sending on Marco Asensio in place of the Spain playmaker.

It was a change that married itself to growing tension inside the Bernabeu until Ronaldo took it upon himself to expel the anxiety.

Benzema did well to hold up a Marcelo cross, but Ronaldo still had plenty to do with a bouncing ball and Filipe Luis in close attendance.
